The Dangers of Phishing.
Oct 25 - Nov 24
The method (used by hackers) of sending deceptive communications, that seem to be coming from a reputable source is called Phishing. Usually, it is done through email and the goal of the hacker is to extract critical data like login information and credit card details, or to install malware on a target’s computing device. Dangers of phishing to individuals: • Cyber criminals impersonating you and reaching out to family and friends, putting them at risk. • Credit cards charged in a fraudulent manner • Money stolen from bank accounts • Personal social media accounts compromised and misused Dangers of phishing at work: • Critical data/files becoming inaccessible • Money stolen from corporate accounts • Personal data of employees and customers exposed • Company’s reputation damaged, sometimes irreparably There is no single silver bullet to avert phishing attacks. A tiered security approach should always be considered to diminish phishing attacks and reduce the impact when such attacks do occur. An important part of this multi-layered approach is staff awareness training as they are regarded by hackers as the weakest and easiest link to break.
