In our latest blog post, we describes a case study on a customer's experience with their father's 97 Boxster, which was brought in for electrical and overall inspection. The car's battery would die overnight, requiring a jumpstart. After checking the charging system, the alternator was found to be working, but the battery had a bad cell and was replaced. During a full inspection, oil leaks were discovered, along with smoke from the exhaust on startup. The largest leak was between the engine and transmission, with smaller leaks from the oil filler tube and Air Oil Separator. Suspecting a leak from the Rear Main Seal or Intermediate Shaft bearing cover, the transmission was removed and the leak was verified from the intermediate shaft bearing cover. An LN Engineering single row IMS retrofit had already been installed. To fix the issue, the camshafts were locked to retain timing, the chain tensioners were safely removed, and a new seal was installed. Additionally, a cracked oil filler tube and faulty air oil separator were replaced. After cleaning and reinstalling all parts, the customer was able to drive a smoke-free Porsche that no longer left oil drops in the garage.
