KITCHEN REMODELING TIPS When you’re hiring a contractor, find one who’s recommended by friends, carries liability insurance and is in good standing with the Better Business Bureau. Get approval and obtain all necessary permits from your city’s planning department before beginning any kitchen remodeling project. Unless you’re changing the look of the entire home, keep the new kitchen’s style consistent with home’s style, from classic with crown moldings to minimalist with clean lines. For longevity, choose wood or wood veneer cabinetry, whether in stock or custom ordered, with sturdy drawer slides and hinges. Avoid flimsy or stapled-together particleboard units. When you have the room, consider a leggy island for an open, spacious feel or a space-saving island that houses the dishwasher, sink or stove. If you have the skills, doing some of the work yourself will obviously save money. But before stripping the kitchen to the bare bones, tally every finishing material, rental tool, disposal service, contractors’ quote and permit, to name a few costs. Then add at least another 10% for hidden expenses, structural issues and forgotten supplies, which will definitely arise.
