OLDER WORKERS // The latest research from the Australian HR Institute (AHRI) and the Australian Human Rights Commission on Employing and Retaining Older Workers was released yesterday. It is concerning that despite the increase in job vacancies, there has been a decrease in older workers securing work. The good news is that the participation rate for workers aged 55 - 64 has increased and more employers are considering more flexible work practices. In my view, employers need to have more inclusive recruitment strategies as this report also showed that 69% of HR Professionals surveyed said that older and younger workers performed at the same level but that older workers offer higher levels of concentration, extensive experience and knowledge and they are more reliable! Older workers looking for work need to consider using current job search strategies, updating their technological skills (not just understand technology but be able to use it) and be across the new recruitment strategies of video prompt interviews and online gamified assessments. The fact that 52% of employers no longer have an age limit for new workers and are including older workers in their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy is great news. Thanks to Hayley Xiberras for coordinating this appearance on Nine today and David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys for the questions.
