Victims of severe winter storms, flooding, and mudslides in California, which began on Jan. 8, 2023, have been granted an extension by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to file various individual and business tax returns and make tax payments until Oct. 16, 2023. This relief applies to individuals and businesses in the specified disaster-affected counties. Among other benefits, eligible taxpayers will have until Oct. 16 to make 2022 contributions to their IRAs and health savings accounts, and farmers can also file their returns and pay taxes due by this extended deadline. The IRS will automatically apply filing and payment relief to taxpayers located in the covered disaster area, while those outside the area should call the IRS disaster hotline to request tax relief. The affected counties in California include Alameda, Colusa, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Kings, Lake, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Tulare, Ventura, Yolo, and Yuba. Taxpayers residing or having a business in these counties qualify for tax relief.
