Causes and Symptoms of Hypermobility Hypermobility can be caused by various factors, including: Genetics: Hypermobility often runs in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition to the condition. Connective Tissue Disorders: Conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Marfan syndrome are associated with hypermobility due to abnormalities in connective tissue. There are 13 subtypes of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, 12 are considered very rare and have genetic markers for diagnosis. hEDS is considered the most common of the subtypes, but currently has no genetic marker, which means diagnosis is based of presenting symptoms, case history and a process of elimination. Repetitive Injury: Multiple injuries to a joint can lead to joint hypermobility. For example multiple ankle sprains or shoulder dislocations. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during puberty, menstruation or pregnancy, can affect joint laxity and contribute to hypermobility. While hypermobility itself may not always cause symptoms, some individuals may experience: - Joint pain - Joint instability - Fatigue - Muscle stiffness - Joint dislocations or subluxations - Soft tissue injuries (such as sprains and strains) - Scoliosis Learn why you should seek help from osteopath for hypermobility. #AlphaSportsMedicine #MaidstoneOsteopathy #OsteopathMaidstone #HypermobilitySyndrome #HypermobilityManagement #OsteopathyForHypermobility #HypermobilityOsteopath #HypermobilityTreatment
