Before undergoing elective cosmetic surgery, certain medical and laboratory tests may be required based on a patient's medical history and age. Dr. Portuese will conduct a physical examination, but patients may also choose to have a comprehensive evaluation by their family physician. An EKG is typically required for men aged 45 and over and women aged 55 and over to screen for potential heart issues. Additional blood tests may be needed depending on the patient's health history; for example, a complete blood count or potassium level check is recommended for patients on diuretics. Women of childbearing age should take a pregnancy test within the week leading up to the surgery to ensure they are not pregnant, especially before undergoing cosmetic blepharoplasty.
Patients should also refrain from taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and any herbal supplements for at least two weeks prior to surgery. It is crucial to arrange for a responsible caretaker to be present for the first 24 hours post-surgery. Due to the effects of anesthesia, patients should not drive themselves or use public transportation alone.
