When custody is shared, one parent/guardian is designated as the primary custodian. Custody orders stay in place until the child turns 18 unless circumstances change. If life circumstances change, the custody order can be modified. One party can file a petition to modify the existing custody agreement. There must be proof that there is a change in circumstances that will impact the minor child’s well -being. It is always recommended that you seek legal advice before petitioning the court yourself.
