Should You Accept a Counteroffer? In the majority of cases, accepting a counteroffer is only a short-term solution to a long-term problem. All of the reasons that motivated you to look for a new job will still be present, and more money or a new title aren’t likely to be sufficient compensation for these other issues in the long run. Additionally, your relationship with your employer is likely to be damaged, as they will now see you as someone who is easily swayed by money and who has one foot out the door. The truth is, if they had truly valued you as an employee, they would have given you a raise or a new position when you asked for it. By accepting a counteroffer, you are not only damaging your relationship with your current employer, but you are probably burning a bridge with the prospective employer who made you the job offer, or the recruiter who helped you find the job. You’re also missing out on the opportunities to develop your skills and grow in your career which the other company could have provided. Statistically, 9/10 people still leave their company within a year of accepting a counteroffer. The odds are not in your favor, and the risks of accepting a counteroffer usually outweigh the rewards.
