Should You Take a Temp Job When You're Looking for a Permanent One? Some people get concerned that taking a temporary job may jeopardize their prospects of getting a permanent job. In truth, there are many advantages to taking temp work while you look for a perm position. If your savings are low, a temp job is a quick option to bring in a paycheck. If you're having trouble finding a perm job, it's possible that your resume credentials aren't enticing to companies. Temp work can help you learn new skills and get experience that will aid you when applying for other positions. And if you're not sure if a particular career or industry is a good fit for you, this is an excellent opportunity to test it out without committing. Getting a new job is easier when you’re currently working, and being unemployed for an extended period can be a significant red flag to potential employers. Taking temp work will prevent resume gaps and demonstrate that you’re hardworking and proactive. You will also have opportunities to network and may find a connection who will help you land your next permanent position. And once you have a perm offer, just give your recruiter notice and leave the temporary position. If you are currently employed, you probably won’t choose to quit a permanent job with benefits for a temporary one (unless the job is truly awesome). If you’re unemployed, consider a temp role. It may not be your ideal, but it can be an opportunity with many benefits.
