All passenger vehicles manufactured since 2006 are equipped with tire pressure monitoring systems, also known as TPMS. This feature is designed to alert you when your tires aren’t properly inflated by displaying a warning light that looks like the cross-section of a tire with an exclamation point inside of it. Although the TPMS is a great safety feature, you shouldn’t solely rely on it to let you know when you need to add air to your tires. You should still check your tire pressure manually at least once a month. The best time to check your pressure is first thing in the morning when the tires are cold. A major automotive study found that 1 in 4 cars and 1 in 3 light trucks has at least one significantly under-inflated tire. Keeping your tires properly inflated is one of the best ways to stay safe on the road—and reduce the cost of purchasing new tires!
