Of these, 14,823 (38%) lived in the unincorporated portions of the township. The name Cherry Hill is derived from an instance when William Cooper, father of Benjamin Cooper purchased 438 cherry trees and transplanted them there. There are several lakes in Cherry Hill; one of these is Lake Louise, which straddles the border with Haddon Township. The lake is accessible only by boat from late April to early October.
