Can You Negotiate Salary with a Temp Agency? In some cases, you may be able to negotiate your salary with a temp agency. Keep in mind that the agency is working for a client company and does not make any hiring or salary decisions. The client company will either have a range they are willing to pay based on experience or a set pay rate for everyone. However, your recruiter can usually advocate for you regarding your pay rate, although you will need to have the skills and/or work experience to back up your request. The recruiting agency's fee is calculated based your pay rate—a higher pay rates equals a higher commission, so they want to get you the best pay rate they can. Before negotiating, do research to know the market rate for your skills. You may also be able to get a higher pay rate by working harder-to-fill jobs like the night shift. Some jobs also offer performance-based raises. Ultimately, the client company has the final say in what they are willing to pay you. That said, it never hurts to ask your recruiter, who will also be able to give insight into common pay rates for others with similar skills. If the agency can meet your request, great. If not, you can always accept the offer and try to negotiate a higher salary directly with the company once you're hired permanently. After you've proven you are a reliable worker who brings valuable contributions to your team, you will be better able to negotiate a pay increase.
